31 Δεκ 2010 · 43. To convert a PNG file to an ICO file, you can use ffmpeg by running this command (replacing img with the name of your input and output file): ffmpeg -i img.png img.ico. ffmpeg does not come pre-installed on most machines however and must be installed manually.

I have created a png image and i want to use that as the icon for all my files and folders, but vista only allows ico files to be used as icons so how do i convert the png to the ico? This thread is locked.

The previous command takes 5 PNG images, and combines them into a single .ico file.

EDIT: As someone has pointed out to me that renaming a file is not how to create an icon, I would like to point out that it was not asked in the question if this was to create a windows icon or not.
