Protein electrophoresis is a specialized test that analyzes specific groups of proteins in the blood serum and measures how much of each group of protein is present. Individual proteins have distinctive sizes and electrical charges.
All serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) results obtained between 2002 and 2009 from clinical cases presented to the University of Bristol Feline Centre were examined retrospectively. One hundred and fifty-five results met the inclusion criteria.
Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) is a laboratory test used to separate serum proteins based on their size and electrical charge. The proteins are separated on agarose gel following application of an electrical charge, then stained, and their density is analysed using a densitometer.
Body fluid protein electrophoresis. Electrophoresis can be performed on body fluids, such as peritoneal fluid. This is usually done in cats with abdominal effusions to support the diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis virus infection. In this disorder, an exudative effusion can develop in the abdomen.
1 Αυγ 2010 · Of the 155 cases, 136 (87.7%) had abnormal SPE results, most commonly due to a polyclonal increase in gamma globulins. A monoclonal gammopathy occurred in four cats; one with feline infectious ...
