1 Σεπ 2015 · Patients can end up on life support, even in unexpected circumstances. Ventilator withdrawal with expected death is a complex process, now considered an ethically and morally acceptable practice. Familiarity and literature on this topic are increasing. Life expectancy following withdrawal varies from minutes up to weeks.
13 Ιουλ 2021 · 1. Introduction. Palliative or compassionate withdrawal of mechanical ventilator support at the end of life aims to optimize comfort, alleviate suffering, and allow a natural death in patients for whom life supports are not achieving desired goals.
20 Σεπ 2024 · This process involves withdrawing mechanical ventilation from a patient nearing the end of life or who has chosen to stop life-sustaining treatments. The focus is on ensuring comfort and preserving dignity throughout the dying process.
Terminal withdrawal was defined as the episode of withdrawal of ventilator support most proximal to death. Eight patients died during the process of withdrawal and prior to complete cessation of mechanical ventilation, resulting in a time to death of zero.
1 Ιουν 2013 · The ventilator discontinuation process is an essential component of overall ventilator management. Undue delay leads to excess stay, iatrogenic lung injury, unnecessary sedation, and even higher mortality.
Although 24 to 48 h of unassisted breathing often is considered to define the successful discontinuation of ventilator support, many studies use shorter time periods to indicate success and often do not report subsequent reintubation rates or the need to reinstitute mechanical ventilatory support.
Families should be told before-hand the steps of withdrawal and whether or not it is planned/desired to remove the endotracheal tube. In addition, they should be counseled about the use of oxygen and medications for symptom control. Assure them that the patient’s comfort is of primary concern.
