The Río de la Plata (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈri.o ðe la ˈplata] ⓘ; lit. ' River of Silver '), also called the River Plate or La Plata River in English, is the estuary formed by the confluence of the Uruguay River and the Paraná River at Punta Gorda.
Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, is located on the northern shore of the estuary, and Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is on the southwestern shore. The delta of the Paraná and the mouth of the Uruguay meet at the head of the Río de la Plata.
