Service animals are: Dogs. Any breed and any size of dog. Trained to perform a task directly related to a person’s disability. Service animals are not: Required to be certified or go through a professional training program. Required to wear a vest or other ID that indicates they’re a service dog.

Titles II and III of the ADA makes it clear that service animals are allowed in public facilities and accommodations. A service animal must be allowed to accompany the handler to any place in the building or facility where members of the public, program participants, customers, or clients are allowed.

To determine if an animal is a service animal, a public entity or a private business may ask two questions: Is this animal required because of a disability? What work or task has this animal been trained to perform?
