The Fromm Brothers Fur and Ginseng Farm is a farm complex in the Town of Hamburg, Marathon County, Wisconsin where four brothers pioneered ginseng farming starting in 1904, and used the profits to develop silver fox farming. By 1929 they were the world's largest producer of both products.
Silver foxes in Russian fur farms are of North American stock, and are selectively bred in order to remove as much brown from the fur as possible, as the presence of brown fur lowers the pelt's value. [7]
As teenagers, the Fromm brothers pursued interests in ginseng farming and raising foxes, a significant turn away from the more traditional farming their family had previously practiced. In 1909, the brothers used profits from growing ginseng to purchase a pair of “silver-blooded” foxes.

The domesticated silver fox (Vulpes vulpes forma amicus) is a form of the silver fox that has been to some extent domesticated under laboratory conditions. The silver fox is a melanistic form of the wild red fox.
These foxes were of the silver-black variety, sometimes known as silver fox, a naturally occurring colour mutation of red fox. The fox industry quickly grew to be PEI’s most profitable agricultural sector. By 1913, there were 277 fox farms, and by 1923, there were 448.
13 Σεπ 2017 · HAMBURG - The historic Fromm brothers farm in northern Marathon County, once the center of high- fashion fox fur production and the nation's largest ginseng grower, has been sold. The property is back in family hands once again; it was purchased a few weeks ago by Tom Neiman, owner of Fromm Family Pet Food in Mequon.
