Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki (Xhosa: [tʰaɓɔ ʼmbɛːki]; born 18 June 1942) is a South African politician who served as the 2nd democratic president of South Africa from 14 June 1999 to 24 September 2008, when he resigned at the request of his party, the African National Congress (ANC). [1]

18 Δεκ 1997 · Thabo Mbeki became a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC in 1975. In 1976 he was again on the road, this time to Nigeria as a representative of the ANC where he played a major role in assisting students from South Africa to relocate in an unfamiliar environment.
Deputy President. After South Africa's first democratic election in April 1994, Mandela chose Mbeki to be the first deputy president in the Government of National Unity. On 10 May 1994, Mbeki was sworn in to his new post with FW De Klerk as the second deputy president.
