The red-shouldered hawk is a medium-sized raptor (also known as a bird of prey), with a small head, hooked bill, and reddish/rust colored “shoulders,” chest, and belly. Juvenile red-shouldered hawks lack the reddish color on the chest and belly and instead exhibit almost white feathers with a brown spot-like pattern.

Not to be confused with the larger red-tailed hawk, the red-shouldered can be identified by its black and white banded tail and wings and by its call – a whistling sound which is imitated by blue jays.
Five Red-shouldered Hawk subspecies are recognized, based on geographic distribution and physical characteristics. The South Florida subspecies has paler markings and a lighter overall appearance than other Red-shouldered Hawks, while the West Coast subspecies has an especially striking black-and-white checkerboard pattern on the back.
Whether wheeling over a swamp forest or whistling plaintively from a riverine park, a Red-shouldered Hawk is typically a sign of tall woods and water. It’s one of our most distinctively marked common hawks, with barred reddish-peachy underparts and a strongly banded tail.
