Located in Burke County 55 miles east of Asheville, South Mountains State Park is situated at the crossroads of the Appalachian Mountains and the Foothills to provide the ultimate backcountry experience.

Please do not attempt to enter the park, even on foot, as conditions are unsafe. Most state parks in western North Carolina have reopened at least partially. Mount Jefferson State Natural Area remains closed. Chimney Rock, Mount Mitchell, and South Mountains are closed long-term until further notice.
Directions. The main entrance to South Mountains State Park is located at the end of South Mountains Park Avenue off old NC 18 in Burke County. From I-40 east or west and points north, take NC 18 (exit 105) south for just over 11 miles. Turn right on Sugar Loaf Road and go 4.2 miles.
In one of the state’s most rugged areas, South Mountains State Park features elevations to 3,000 feet, an 80-foot waterfall, mountain streams and more than 40 miles of trails for hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers.
Directions. South Mountains State Park is located in Burke County, 20.5 miles south of Morganton. From I-40, turn south on NC 18, travel 11.1 miles and make a right turn onto SR 1913 (Sugarloaf Road). Take SR 1913 to Old NC 18 4.3 miles and turn left. Travel 2.7 miles and make a right turn onto SR 1901 (Ward's Gap Road).
