3 Ιουν 2018 · Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Roch cemetery doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary, at first. However, this quiet spot is home to one of the most peculiar settings: the shrine of St. Roch. The neighborhood previously known as Faubourg Franklin, became St. Roch in 1867.
New Orleans Catholic Cemeteries completed the full interior restoration of St. Roch Chapel in 2022, which functions as the National Shrine of St. Roch, in order to preserve its historic integrity and safeguard its future.
1 Μαρ 2018 · The Chapel of Prosthetics, New Orleans's St Roch Cemetery. Beyond the tombstones, at the back of St. Roch cemetery in the US city of New Orleans, Louisiana, lies the shrine of St. Roch, dedicated to the 14th century Catholic saint, who was known to have miraculous healing powers.
In 2017, when work crews began emptying 145-year-old St. Roch Chapel in advance of its complete interior restoration, the chapel’s ornate “retable” – the shelved unit above a church’s main altar featuring decorated panels and niches for sacred objects – was literally vanishing.
Eight pews, salvaged from a decommissioned church in the northern U.S., and a 19th-century, French-carved statue of St. Roch, procured from an antiques shop in Texas, are among the chapel’s “new” furnishings.
