Our History. The site of the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis, King of France, has been the center of worship for the Catholic faithful in New Orleans since the founding of our city in 1718. The first permanent church, built in 1727, was burned in the fire of 1788.
St. Louis Cathedral, located in the historic French Quarter, is the oldest continuously active Roman Catholic Cathedral in the United States. It was originally built in 1724 and rebuilt twice after a hurricane and a fire.
