20 Μαΐ 2009 · Step Flashing. Stepped flashing is used where a sloped shingled roof intersects a vertical wall. Step flashings are interwoven with the shingles and act essentially as shingles with an upturned leg to allow a transition of the vertical drainage plane of the wall to the drainage plane of the roof.
Step flashing is a roofing technique that safeguards the meeting point of your roof with the sidewall of your building. It's particularly crucial because these areas are especially susceptible to water leakage during rainfall, which can damage your roof and lead to the growth of mold and mildew.
Step flashing: Step flashing is best for where the roof face meets a wall, for example, where a dormer projects out of the roof. In this spot, it’s possible that water could flow down the wall and slip past the shingles into the building below.

GAF’s standard step flashing instructions call for step flashing to extend a minimum of 5” (127 mm) up the wall and a minimum of 5” (127 mm) out onto the shingles on the roof.
