In summer 2010, many cities in eastern Europe recorded extremely high values of daytime (for example, Moscow reached 38.2°C), nighttime (Kiev reached 25°C), and daily mean (Helsinki reached 26.1°C) temperatures (fig. S1).
During the Russian heat wave, the EPS predicted 20-year extreme temperatures with very high probability on 29 July. To generate this probability forecast in terms of return period, the following steps are performed.
The national average temperature during summer (June–August) 2010 and autumn (September–November) 2010 was the third and second warmest, respectively, since national records began in 1948.
