The Indian-head test pattern is a test card that gained widespread adoption during the black-and-white television broadcasting era as an aid in the calibration of television equipment. It features a drawing of a Native American wearing a headdress surrounded by numerous graphic elements designed to test different aspects of broadcast display.
Old televisions had knobs to adjust vertical and horizontal beam synchronization, so you could tell if you had a problem. Sometimes it was necessary to move the antenna around. The pattern is meant to make various distortions, ghosting, and echoes easy to spot.

21 Ιαν 2009 · KMOX TV test pattern. The interior of the pattern was divided into sections. The innermost, shaded circles, consisted of three concentric circular areas of differing density: the central area being black; the next an intermediate gray tone and the outer, was white.
