The power can be supplied by an external power supply or the power from the host over the bus can be used (i.e. host or bus powered rather than "non-powered"). The USB hub itself is a USB device. –
24 Ιουλ 2018 · You can use Device Manager to View "Devices by connection", so that you can see which device is on which hub. Expanded Device Manager where you can find the hub by looking at the device plugged into it. A YubiKey in this case. I needed this information because I had to turn off Energy Saving on the port that my USB-C power supply was connected to.
After updating to Windows 10, no monitors that are connected through the docking station are detected. The monitors are detected if I plug them directly into the laptop's HDMI or VGA ports. However, other USB devices (e.g. keyboard, mouse) still function properly through the docking station. Only the display monitors seem not to be detected.

You can also have a couple of small USB hubs (or just single USB extension connections) on the desktop and move the printer connector between these manually.
USB 3.0 hub price was around 20€, not a cheap one. Conclusion: A USB hub 3.0 loses lot of MiB/s transfer speed when more than one device is connected (and transferring) at the same time, who knows why! Maybe because it divides the time transfer by the number of devices (quite wrong) or maybe because it has a huge overhead on cycling devices, etc.
16 Ιουν 2018 · A USB 3 port offers up to 6 workload units if a device requests that (6 * 150 mA = 900 mA) whereas a USB 2 bus offers at most 5 (5 * 100 mA = 500 mA). A bus powered hub in USB 2 may only distribute 1 workload unit to each of its ports. So when connecting a USB device to a bus powered USB 2 hub, this device cannot get more than 100 mA.

There it will say if it's used as USB 2 or USB 3, and even if your USB 3 device is currently limited by being plugged into a USB 2 port. Share.
