Valence electrons are the ones farthest away from the nuclei and therefore, we find them in the outermost two orbitals. For example, Li (1 s2 2 s1) has one valence electron, and it is the 2 s orbital. Chlorine (1 s² 2 s² 2 p⁶3s²3p⁵) has seven valence electrons in the 3 s and 3 p sublevels.
