Most collectors call the early “U” damper bugs the “#4 Blue Racer” and the later “L” damper bugs the “late Blue Racer.” Around 1940, the standard base finish was changed to black crackle, and the Deluxe version became available. The #4 Blue Racer was also made in the WW2 Deluxe version.
Wanted to try a bug and found a 1959 Blue racer on Ebay for a good price. Takes time to set up for your style and speed. Was a little fast, so I replaced the steel weight with one made from copper tungsten.
(Later named the Blue Racer) bug key. A super example of this model with a black japanned base with the gold detailed pinstriping, plus a U shaped damper mechanism. The main arm has been replaced at some time and is longer than normal, but this anables an extra weight to be added to slow the dots down.
Blue Racer Standard. The "little brother" to the Original key is physically smaller - base width 2.5" instead of 3.5" and uses a different stock weighting arrangement for slightly faster key speed (Vari-Speed accessory can be used with this key also).
Of all the Vibroplex bugs I find that my Blue Racer model (Y2K) year 2000 is a very fast bug for the more advanced operator. My Y2K came with just one weight and that is what I found is all needed for my operating skill, you may require two weights.

Yes, you have an excellent quality bug, but no, they are not great at spacing. The dashes tend to be always too long relative to the dits. Try to work on that, but all I can say is: good luck with that ;-)
