Welch is better than other areas in that its basics are covered, but you are getting the bare-bones. Areas outside of Welch have decrepit infrastructure as the coal companies no longer own and maintain those towns - and the associated water and sewer lines.
Growing up, I always heard about Welch as this booming town full of businesses where nearly everyone was friendly and welcoming. Sidewalks that were teeming with shoppers and pedestrians, and bumper to bumper traffic from the small hours till late in the night.

McDowell is West Virginia’s West Virginia. Look at this frickin elitism. Welch is awesome. McDowell is my favorite county in the state. Awesome history. You just need the maturity to look past some scars and your own prejudices to see the real beauty of the area.
