Pre-op (pre-operative) means the person plans to or wants to have some form of transition surgery but has not yet. Post-op means they already have had some form of surgery and may or may not be pursuing more. Non-op refers to transgender people who do not desire any gender-related surgeries.
Pre-op = pre operation = someone yet to have gender confirmation surgery. This usually refers to genital surgery (eg, vaginoplasty for a trans woman, metoidoplasty or phalloplasty for a trans man). Pre op trans people will most likely have the genitals they had at birth.
A person’s gender is to be respected regardless of surgical history/status or what kind of genitals they have or had. It is best to avoid terms such as “pre-op”, “non-op”, or “post-op,” as they reinforce the assumption all trans people want to or will have the opportunity to have surgery.
