This is a list of coolest stars and brown dwarfs discovered, arranged by decreasing temperature. The stars with temperatures lower than 2,000 K are included. Kirkpatrick et al. 2021 [1] has a more complete list of nearby objects with a temperature below 2,400 K. Objects with a temperature below 500 K from this paper were included in this list.
10 Απρ 2022 · The colors of the stars indicate their surface temperatures. There are five star colors: blue, white, yellow, orange, and red. The hottest stars are blue, with temperatures around 25,000 K. Red is the color of the coldest stars, which have surface temperatures of approximately 3,000 K.
23 Μαρ 2011 · For nearly a century astronomers have classified most stars by their spectra, using the letters O, B, A, F, G, K, and M for those hottest to coolest. In the last 15 years astronomers have added two more classes, L and T , for even cooler, dimmer dwarfs.
3 Οκτ 2024 · Red dwarfs are the coolest main-sequence stars, with a spectral type of M and a surface temperature of about 2,000–3,500 K. Because these stars are so cool, spectral lines of molecules such as titanium oxide, which would be disassociated in hotter stars, are quite prominent.
23 Αυγ 2011 · PASADENA, Calif. – Scientists using data from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have discovered the coldest class of star-like bodies, with temperatures as cool as the human body. Astronomers hunted these dark orbs, termed Y dwarfs, for more than a decade without success.
12 Αυγ 2024 · Orange Stars: K-type stars, like Alpha Centauri B, have cooler effective temperatures around 3,500 to 5,000 K, resulting in an orange color. Red Stars: M-type stars, such as Proxima Centauri, are the coolest stars, with effective temperatures below 3,500 K, making them appear deep red to our eyes.
