The indicator only takes into account the consumption which is recorded from production, import, export, and sales data often via taxation.
In 2023, Germans are projected to consume 1.91 billion liters, a 1.6% drop from the previous year and a consistent decrease from 2018’s figure of 1.97 billion liters. Despite this, Germany remains one of the top consumers of wine globally, contributing 8.6% to the world’s total wine consumption.
World wine production in 2022 is estimated at 258 mhl, marking a slight decrease of 1% compared to 2021. This is due to higher-than-expected harvest volume in Europe, despite the drought and heat waves during spring and summer, and average production level recorded in the Southern Hemisphere.
