William Hazen Rogers (born May 13, 1801) was an American master silversmith and a pioneer in the silver-plate industry and whose work and name have survived to the present day.
9 Αυγ 2024 · One of the fastest and easiest ways to determine if a piece of silver was crafted or designed by William Rogers is to look for Wm Rogers silver marks. American sterling silver markings contain the mark of the manufacturer or silversmith.
In 1879, the firm consolidated with the Rogers Cutlery Co (started in 1871) and William H. Watrous, president of the cutlery company, was made president of the two branches. The company was primarily a maker of silverplated flatware but in the 1880’s and 90’s offered a fairly externsive line of plated hollowware.
There are a number of makers of silver (both sterling and silverplate) that use the Rogers name. This post is an attempt to create a list, history, and database that will make this situation a little less confusing. I do not imagine that I will be able to get everything down in one go.
The firm was formed in 1901 to purchase tools, machinery, trade-mark and good-will of A.F. Towle & Son. The firm was active in the sterling silver tableware manufacture in Greefield, MA, with George E. Rogers as President. The firm began to use Lunt Silversmiths trademark in 1935. In 1898 Meriden Britannia Co and various other independent New England silversmiths joined themselves together to form the International Silver Co that became the world's largest manufacturer of silverware.
