2 Δεκ 2009 · Leonidas (c. 530-480 B.C.) was a king of the city-state of Sparta from about 490 B.C. until his death at the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian army in 480 B.C.
29 Δεκ 2021 · Although he misses the head by inches, Leonidas manages to wound Xerxes. After the act, Xerxes can’t allow the Spartans to leave the battlefield alive. Persian soldiers growl, arrows rain on the Spartans, and an ending shot (akin to a mural) unveils King Leonidas as dead, along with his army.
Leonidas entered myth as a hero and the leader of the 300 Spartans who died in battle at Thermopylae. While the Greeks lost this battle, they were able to expel the Persian invaders in the following year.
While it has been established that King Leonidas of Sparta died at the Battle of Thermopylae in August 11, 480 BC, very little is known about the year of his birth, or for that matter, his formative years. Paul Cartledge has narrowed the date of the birth of King Leonidas to around July 1st, 540 BC.

The 480 BC Battle of Thermopylae is the stuff of military legend when, in popular lore, a mere 300 Spartans commanded by King Leonidas held off a Persian force led by Xerxes the Great that Herodotus claimed as 2.6 million.
