Learn how the body maintains a narrow pH range using various buffering systems, such as proteins, phosphates, and bicarbonate-carbonic acid. Find out how the respiratory and renal systems adjust blood pH in response to acid-base disturbances.
12 Σεπ 2022 · This discussion intends to impart a basic understanding of acid-base balance in the body while providing a systematic way to approach patients who present with conditions causing alterations in pH. The human body experiences 4 main types of acid-based disorders: metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, respiratory acidosis, and respiratory ...
Learn how the body controls the pH of blood and what happens when it is too acidic or basic. Find out the causes, types and symptoms of acid-base disorders and how they are compensated.

Proper physiological functioning depends on a very tight balance between the concentrations of acids and bases in the blood. Acid-base balance is measured using the pH scale (Figure 81.1). A variety of buffering systems permit blood and other bodily fluids to maintain a narrow pH range (7.35 – 7.45), even in the face of perturbations.
Acid-Base Balance. Metabolic processes in the human body continually produce acid and, to a lesser degree, base. Hydrogen ion (H+) is especially reactive; it can attach to negatively charged proteins and, in high concentrations, alter their overall charge, configuration, and function.
