The Osher Foundation supports scholarship programs at more than 250 colleges and universities around the country. The Osher Reentry Scholarship Program provides support for undergraduate students who have experienced a gap in their education of at least five years.
At present, the Foundation supports 125 lifelong learning programs on university and college campuses across the country, with at least one grantee in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Foundation also supports a National Resource Center for Osher Institutes which is located at Northwestern University.
Osher has been a notable philanthropist since 1977 when he founded the Bernard Osher Foundation. The foundation is a major supporter of higher education and the arts, and Osher has consequently become known as "the quiet philanthropist."

The foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for residents of the San Francisco Bay Area and the state of Maine through post-secondary student scholarships and arts and humanities grants.
