Using statistical models for analysis, age-adjusted rates for new brain and other nervous system cancer cases have been falling on average 1.2% each year over 2012–2021. Age-adjusted death rates have been stable over 2013–2022. 5-year relative survival trends are shown below.
In 2018, cancer of the brain and central nervous system was the 17th most common cancer type, with an estimated 297 000 new cases worldwide. The study of the etiology of brain tumours is particularly challenging because of the relatively low incidence rates of brain and central nervous system cancers and the high heterogeneity of these tumours.
Brain cancer incidence and mortality: 2019 results. Worldwide, 347,992 new cases of brain cancer were recorded in 2019: it was diagnosed in 187,491 (54%) males and 160,501 (46%) females (Fig. 1, Fig. 2). In 2019, the total number of deaths from brain cancer worldwide was 246,253 (138,605 males and 107,648 females).

17 Σεπ 2022 · Results. In 2019, there were 347,992 (262,084–388,896) global cases of brain and CNS cancers, which showed a significant increase (94.35%) from the period between 1990 to 2019. The global ASIR in 2019 was 4.34 (3.27–4.86) per 100, 000 population, which showed an increasing trend for the years 1990–2019 (13.82% [-27.27–32.83]).
