History. Early years. The first regular flight between Prague and Bratislava started in 1923, by the newly formed carrier Czechoslovak Airlines. At that time the airport for Bratislava was in Vajnory, about 3 km away from the current airport. That airport is now closed.

Slovakia's primary international airport is Bratislava Airport. It was given that name shortly after Slovakia gained its independence in 1993 in honor of General Milan Rastislav Tefánik, whose plane crashed nearby in 1919.
