You should know the results of your breast ultrasound by the end of your appointment. Your provider will let you know if what they see on the ultrasound looks noncancerous (benign), like a cyst, or is potentially cancerous (malignant). They’ll schedule or perform follow-up procedures right away.
How are breast ultrasound results reported? Doctors use the same standard system to describe results of mammograms, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI. This system (called the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System or BI-RADS) sorts the results into categories numbered 0 through 6.

Ultrasound imaging of the breast uses sound waves to produce pictures of the internal structures of the breast. It is used to help diagnose breast lumps or other abnormalities found during a physical exam, or on a mammogram or breast MRI. Ultrasound is safe, noninvasive, and does not use radiation.
