Porcelain painting was developed in China and later taken up in Korea and then Japan. Decorated Chinese porcelain from the 9th century has been found in the Middle East. Porcelain for trade with this region often has Islamic motifs.
The exhibition Ancient Chinese Porcelain Art displays the most representative porcelain selected from the collections of our museum. It is divided into three sections: “The art of color glazed porcelain,” “The art of underglaze colored porcelain” and “The art of overglaze porcelain.”
Chinese Porcelains. The shape and the decorative motifs of this finely potted stem cup are characteristic of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The interior is decorated with two incised dragons chasing flaming pearls around the cavetto and covered with colorless glaze.
The collection has since grown to about 23,000 objects that span the Neolithic age to the present. It includes a wide range of objects such as paintings, prints, jade, bronzes, lacquer and ceramics that reflect the richness and diversity of China that has long been internationally connected.
Commissioned by the court, this spectacular storage jar, made in the kilns in Jingdezhen, is dated to the rule of the Xuande emperor by an inscription on its shoulder. Its painted decoration features an animated dragon undulating across a sparsely clouded sky.

Within this gallery of almost 1,700 objects are examples of the finest Chinese ceramics in the world, dating from the third to the 20th century. Some are unique creations, while others were mass-produced in batches of several hundred at a time.
