How To Use the Thread Size Chart. Identify the thread type: Determine whether you need coarse, fine, 8-thread series, UNC, UNF, metric threads, or structural bolts based on your project requirements. Find the diameter: Locate the nominal diameter of the bolt or screw. Check the pitch: Find the corresponding thread pitch for the selected diameter.
For example, an M12x1.75 (coarse) thread has a 1.75mm pitch, while an M12x1.50 (fine) thread has a 1.50mm pitch. Both DIN and ISO standards for metric threads ignore the pitch callout on coarse threads.
