David is a marble statue of the biblical hero by the Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello. One of his early works (1408–1409), it was originally commissioned by the Operai del Duomo, the Overseers of the Office of Works, for the Florence Cathedral and was his most important commission up to that point.
Donatello created the marble statue that would become known as Saint George in 1415. The figure of Saint George was sculpted by Donatello as being a muscular young man that was adorned in clothing and armor that was characteristic for Christian Crusader soldiers to wear.
Donatello's first marble David, carved when the sculptor was in his early twenties, was commissioned in 1408 by the Opera del Duomo, to stand high on a buttress of Florence Cathedral.
Donatello (about 1386 – 1466) is arguably the greatest Italian Renaissance sculptor. He revolutionised sculpture both through his inventive treatment of imagery, and his mastery of an extraordinary range of materials – including marble and stone, bronze, wood, terracotta and stucco as well as unusual mixed media.

Donatello’s costly life-sized bronze is often eclipsed in the modern imagination by Michelangelo’s better known marble version. The later artist’s nude colossus, however, owes much to the early renaissance sculptor.
