History. Settled in 1812 and platted in 1872, DuBois was incorporated as a borough in 1881 and as a city in 1914. The town was founded by John Rumbarger, for whom the town was originally named. The Rumbarger Cemetery is all that survives of John Rumbarger's "original settlement" in the city of DuBois.

The origins of the officially designated City of DuBois date to 1877 with the first attempt to organize the town of DuBois into a borough. However, there were several delays and DuBois did not become an incorporated borough until 1881.
The DuBois Area Historical Society open to the public throughout the year. We are located at 30 W Long Ave. DuBois, PA. Summer Hours — April to November. Tuesday 10am–2pm. Wednesday 10am–3pm. Thursday 11am–1pm. Winter Hours — December to March.
John DuBois first visited the area now occupied by Rumbarger in 1842, meeting George Shaffer. When DuBois returned in 1871 to develop the property, he had purchased he found Rumbarger living in the now deceased Shaffer’s home.
The city is named for John DuBois who settled here in 1871, bringing with him a lifetime of experience in the lumber business. In addition to building the lumber mill, he built several other factories, invented equipment and methods to streamline production and improved worker safety.
