Interpretation + Reporting - What is the ordering provider’s question, and how may I best answer it with my EEG interpretation?-Is this record normal or abnormal?-If abnormal, is the abnormality focal or generalized?-Is the abnormality suggestive of seizures or an alternative diagnosis (eg, encephalopathy)?
An EEG is a scalp recording of brain wave activity. The brain wave activity recorded is a summation of the inhibitory and excitatory post synaptic potentials that occur across a neuron membrane.
1 Σεπ 2022 · While reading a routine EEG recorded for 20–30 min, the interpreter has to review approximately 120–180 pages or screens, each containing 19–25 channels of EEG and other waveforms. This includes normal and abnormal EEG activity during different states of consciousness and in response to a variety of stimuli.
However, the level of comfort among trainees to confidently interpret EEGs is variable. At first most trainees will be intimidated by their appearance and instinctively limit themselves to reading their reports.
This EEG Guideline incorporates the practice of structuring a report of results obtained during routine adult electroencephalography. It is intended to reflect one of the current practices in reporting an EEG and serves as a revision of the previous guideline entitled “Writing an EEG Report”.
the EEG report to address the features as normal or abnormal, with subsequent specification of their clinical importance. The significance should be evident to the clinician and the findings readily interpretable within the patient-specific context of the rsEEG recording. When reporting specialized types of EEG (e.g., electro-
