Inhibins and activins are considered members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-8) superfamily of growth and differentiation factors, based on a pattern of conserved cysteine residues in the a and g subunits, similar to other ligands in the family.

Heterodimerisation of the activin β-subunits with the inhibin α-subunit results in inhibin A (α/βA) and inhibin B (α/βB).
Betaglycan is a coreceptor that enhances inhibin’s antagonism of activin signaling (Figs. 1C, 2F). The inhibin β subunit binds to one type II activin receptor, competing directly with activin binding. However, the inhibin α subunit cannot bind a second type II receptor.
