23 Μαρ 2023 · Highly sensitive testing methods applied by the JRC reveal that 46% of honey imported in the EU may be adulterated. The suspicion of fraud results from an EU coordinated action.
29 Μαρ 2023 · An investigation by the European Commission tested 320 honey samples from 18 countries and found almost 50% were fraudulent. All 10 samples from the UK failed authenticity testing. This means they contained other (unpermitted) ingredients, such as food additives, colourings or sugar syrups.
23 Μαρ 2023 · During the EU coordinated action, 133 businesses (70 importers and 63 exporters) were found to be involved in consignments of honey suspected of being adulterated. A further 44 operators have been investigated to date, many of them thanks to OLAF. OLAF’s investigation detected various types of fraud, including adulteration.
21 Μαρ 2023 · These investigations aimed to put a stop to operators voluntarily placing contaminated honey onto the EU market and sanction them accordingly if needed. Of the 320 samples taken at EU borders and analysed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), 147 (46%) were suspected of being non-compliant.
Based on the above, there is a strong suspicion that a large part of the honey imported from non-EU countries and found suspicious by the JRC of being adulterated remains present and undetected on the EU market.
