Fort Yuma was a fort in California located in Imperial County, across the Colorado River from Yuma, Arizona. It was Established in 1848. It served as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from 1858 until 1861. The fort was retired from active military service on May 16, 1883, and transferred to the Department of the Interior.
Fort Yuma was established to protect the southern emigrant travel route to California and to attempt control of the warlike Yuma Indians in the surrounding 100 mile area. Established by Captain Samuel P. Heintzelman, 2nd Infantry, it was originally named Camp Independence.
Its purpose was to defend the newly settled community of Yuma, Arizona, and immigrants taking the southern route to California. However, shortly after it was established, it was moved across the Colorado River in March 1851 to protect the ferry crossing.
The present barracks and several other buildings were built 1852 to 1855. It was named Fort Yuma at the beginning of the Civil War, and continued to be used by the U.S. Army until 1885. The buildings were assigned to the Yuma Indian Reservation in 1892. California Historical Landmark #806.
The Fort Yuma-Quechan Reservation is located along the Colorado River near Yuma, Arizona. Reservation lands encompass portions of Arizona and California, and share a border with Mexico’s Baja California.
