Saxon Switzerland National Park is located in the eastern part of Germany near the Czech Republic border in the Free State of Saxony. The park covers an area of 36.1 square miles (93.5 sq km).
Saxon Switzerland (German: Sächsische Schweiz) is a hilly climbing area and national park in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It is located around the Elbe valley south-east of Dresden in Saxony, Germany, adjoining Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic. Together with the Czech part, the region is known as Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland.
Saxon Switzerland is an intensively fissured and rocky canyon landscape. The highest peak of the National Park, the Großer Winterberg, is at 556 meters (1,814 feet) above sea level, and is only a short distance from the valley of the Elbe river at 110 to 120 meters (360 to 390 feet).
Saxon Switzerland National Park is the only non-alpine rock National Park in Germany and one of the smallest with a size of 94 square kilometres. The protected area consists of two parts on the right bank of the River Elbe. The smaller part is situated in the surroundings of Kurort Rathen.
Saxon Switzerland is Germany’s only rock National Park. The landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, eroded to picturesque rugged scenery of Cretaceous origin, provides a fascinating micro-climate and is home to a real treasure of rare animals and plant species.
This national park is located southeast of Dresden in the Free State of Saxony in the eastern region of Germany. Natural beauty abounds in Saxon Switzerland with its sandstone cliffs, unique rock formations, deep canyons and lush valleys, and amazing lookout points.
