4 Οκτ 2024 · The history of the Western state begins in ancient Greece. Plato and Aristotle wrote of the polis, or city-state, as an ideal form of association, in which the whole community’s religious, cultural, political, and economic needs could be satisfied.
THE ORIGINS OF THE CONCEPT OF THE STATE. Alan Harding. This article aims to trace the development of the concept of the state the use of the word by politicians and lawyers as well as by theorists, prejudice as to what 'state' ought to mean.
Etymology. The word state and its cognates in some other European languages (stato in Italian, estado in Spanish and Portuguese, état in French, Staat in German and Dutch) ultimately derive from the Latin word status, meaning "condition, circumstances".
The state, at least the modern state as defined here, is an historical product, which first emerged in some countries of the Northwest; the history of these processes is important not only per se but also because it has influenced, both by diffusion and by sheer exercise of power by Northwestern countries, state formation in the rest of the world.
This essay discusses various accounts of the emergence and development of the modern state, comparing security, economic, and institutionalist approaches. It then links these approaches to insights regarding contemporary statehood.

The history of philosophy and the development of political concepts seem to be central to understanding the state. The influence of Roman law and republican government, and the rediscovery of Aristotle in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, are obvious important influences.
