But in spite of it being so well-known and so often repeated, do we really know what it means, or why we are saying that God’s name should be “hallowed”?

To hallow something is to make it holy or separate it or sanctify it. Jesus taught His followers to pray that God the Father would “hallow” His name. Significantly, this request comes first.

1 Οκτ 2024 · To pray ‘hallowed be Your name’ means to ask God to let His name be worshipped, exalted, honored, and adored on earth as it is in heaven. It is to ask God to so move and act in the world, that people will worship and treasure Him above all else.
The phrase "hallowed be thy name" is meant to remind us that God is perfect, pure, holy, and worthy of all praise and honor. It is a way to echo the angels in heaven who declare, "Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever!
