Millions of dogs, monkeys, mice and other animals currently suffer in U.S. laboratories. But non-animal alternatives will one day completely replace experiments on animals. This will be a game-changer not just for animals, but for human health.
Due to innovations in science, animal tests are being replaced in areas such as toxicity testing, neuroscience and drug development. But much more needs to be done. Once new non-animal methods have been developed, there are often massive bureaucratic hurdles to implementing and enforcing their use.
Alternatives to animal testing can be used for toxicological research, such as chemical safety and drug effectiveness testing, or other types of biomedical research that examine biological mechanisms of disease.
Alternatives to animal testing are the development and implementation of test methods that avoid the use of live animals.
HSI works through intergovernmental bodies such as the OECD to accelerate global adoption of modern non-animal testing methods, and through our network of country offices to have these new approaches taken up through national regulations.
1 Ιαν 2022 · Computer-based modeling and screening, conventional chemical laboratory experiments, in vitro cell-free extract-based methods, cell-based 2D and 3D assay systems, and tissues excised from spent animals or human donors are some of the approaches to alternative toxicological screening.
Thankfully, scientists are developing humane alternatives to animal tests, and new non-animal methods are regularly becoming available. Before they can be used, alternatives are rigorously tested, validated and finally approved for use so scientists and regulators are sure they work.
