Period of Communicability. Peak infectious time begins 1 to 2 days before swelling to 5 days after, but may range from 7 days before to 9 days after. For the purpose of contact tracing and exclusions, the infectious period is 2 days before to 5 days after parotitis.

Guidelines for the Nurse in the School Setting contains excerpts from the Illinois School Nurse Emergency Care (SNEC) Course manual, 7th Edition (2021), to provide a resource that school nurses can utilize in their practice.
The programs are approved by the State Education Professional Licensure Board (SEPLB) to prepare Registered Nurses (R.N.) to obtain Professional Educator License, endorsed in school nursing, which is the required license to perform all the duties of school nurse as defined in Illinois School Code.
1) Knowledge Indicators – The competent school nurse: A) understands principles of health promotion and disease and injury prevention. B) understands how to conduct school health assessments to identify current health issues and the need for programs.
These are intended to assist IASN members in obtaining school nurse certification, graduate education, and recognize professional achievement. IASN members are encouraged to apply for these. Applications will be accepted starting April 1.
