5 Ιουν 2008 · Neuromuscular irritability with hypocalcaemia requires prompt management in hospital and treatment with intravenous calcium. Asymptomatic patients with corrected serum calcium less than 1.9 mmol/l may develop serious complications and admission should be considered.
3 Ιαν 2016 · Intravenous administration of calcium is not without problems. Rapid administration could result in arrhythmias so intravenous administration should be carefully monitored. Local vein irritation can occur with solutions >200 mg/100 mL of elemental calcium.
In severe cases, intravenous calcium forms the mainstay of initial therapy, but it is essential to ascertain the underlying cause and commence specific therapy as early as possible. This guideline aims to take the non-specialist through the initial phase of assessment and management.
The dose and route of calcium to correct hypocalcaemia should be determined on an individual patient basis. There are no national UK guidelines for treatment, and practice varies across UK Hospital Trusts. Initial Treatment1-4. Any underlying cause of hypocalcaemia should be investigated and corrected.
Intravenous calcium infusion is essential to raise calcium levels and resolve or minimize symptoms in the setting of acute hypocalcemia. Oral calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation is the most frequently used as treatment of chronic hypocalcemia.
