  1. This course will introduce you to the concepts behind special relativity including, but not limited to, length contraction, time dilation, the Lorentz transformation, relativistic kinematics, Doppler shifts, and even so-called “paradoxes.”

  2. Special relativity corrects the hitherto laws of mechanics to handle situations involving all motions and especially those at a speed close to that of light (known as relativistic velocities).

  3. Video Lectures. Week 1: Foundations of Special Relativity. We start with an introduction, the organizational structure of the course, and dive into a discussion of waves, light, and the Michelson-Morley experiment.

  4. Learn the need and the theory of special relativity, which extends the principle of Galilean relativity to all physical laws. Explore the conflict between Galilean relativity and Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, and the consequences of Einstein's postulates.

  5. In 1905 Albert Einstein developed the theory of special relativity. This theory explains the limit on an object’s speed and describes the consequences. Relativity does not only apply to far-reaching and (as yet) unrealized activities like human interstellar travel.

  6. Freely sharing knowledge with learners and educators around the world. Learn more. MIT OpenCourseWare is a web based publication of virtually all MIT course content. OCW is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity.

  7. Overview. This is the first of a series of lectures on relativity. The lecture begins with a historical overview and goes into problems that aim to describe a single event as seen by two independent observers. Maxwell’s theory, as well as the Galilean and Lorentz transformations are also discussed. Lecture Chapters.
