Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (Sinhala: පින්නවල අලි අනාථාගාරය), is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.
During our trip from Negombo to Kandy, our tour guide proposed this visit. This government orphanage takes care of 20 elephants. Low entry fee, and you get to see the elephants up close. They have a great space to walk freely, and go to the river twice a day for their bath.

This 24 acres large elephant orphanage is a also breeding pace for elephants, the first elephant baby was born in 1984, and until the nineties it had the greatest Herd of elephants in captivity in the world. Between 1975 and 2012, 67 animals were born here.
