The history of law links closely to the development of civilization. Ancient Egyptian law, dating as far back as 3000 BC, was based on the concept of Ma'at and characterised by tradition, rhetorical speech, social equality and impartiality.
The legal profession has its origins in ancient Greece and Rome. Although in Greece it was forbidden to take payment for pleading the cause of another, the rule was widely flouted. After the time of Claudius, lawyers (iuris consulti) could practise openly, although their remuneration was limited.
Comparative legal history is the study of law in two or more different places or at different times. [1] [2] [3] As a discipline, it emerged between 1930 and 1960 in response to legal formalism, [4] and builds on scattered uses of legal-historical comparison since antiquity.
