Earth's lithosphere, which constitutes the hard and rigid outer vertical layer of the Earth, includes the crust and the lithospheric mantle (or mantle lithosphere), the uppermost part of the mantle that is not convecting.

It behaves far less ductile than the asthenosphere, which is partially molten (from 1 % to 5 %, higher percentage underneath mid-oceanic spreading ridges) and thus able to provide the mobility necessary for the tectonic movement of the lithospheric plates.

The lithosphere is located between the asthenosphere below and the atmosphere above. It consists of the solid crust and the uppermost mantle.
