In this volume, Tulving and Craik define memory as ‘the ability to recollect past events and to bring learned facts and ideas back to mind’.
In this paper, we review these advances and describe an extended definition of memory. This definition is largely accepted in neuroscience but not explicitly stated. In the extended definition, memory is the capacity to store and retrieve information.
The neurobiological study of memory implies first of all an effort to understand how neurons function and how neuronal function can change. This analysis has properly proceeded, in ever increasing detail, at the level of cells and synapses with biochemical, physiological, and anatomical techniques.
In this section we will consider the two types of memory, explicit memory and implicit memory , and then the three major memory stages: sensory , short-term , and long-term (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968).
