This collection contains text searchable images of the official New York City birth index produced by the NYC Department of Health. Organized by year, names are arranged alphabetically by the first letter of the last name.
The NYC Historical Vital Records Project. The New York City Municipal Archives is undertaking a mass digitization project to provide online access to 13.3 million historical birth, death, and marriage records.
Indexes of the birth, death, and marriage records contain certificate numbers, and can be searched on: Ancestry. German Genealogy Group. Italian Genealogical Group. FamilySearch. By Name beta. Searching by name is in beta mode and may not produce accurate results.
Vital Records Indexes. The State Department of Health makes available for public use microfiche copies of older indexes to birth, marriage, and death certificates. The indexes cover the entire state outside of New York City and start in June 1880 (deaths) or 1881 (marriages and births).
Overview. Vital Records has birth records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). Birth records are also available from the local Registrar of Vital Statistics where the event occurred.
This collection consists of robust indexes to births in the five Boroughs of New York City reported to the Health Department prior to 1910. Birth records are available for the following boroughs: Bronx, 1898 - 1909. Brooklyn, 1866 - 1909. Manhattan, 1866 -1904.
