Why do I need to fast before my blood test? Some blood tests give more useful results if you fast before the sample is taken. The vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, and proteins that make up all food and drinks can afect blood-level readings, clouding the results of your test.
A blood test is usually done at a GP surgery or hospital. The test usually takes about 10 minutes. A healthcare professional will take a small amount of blood, usually from the inside of your elbow, using a needle.
How long do I need to fast before my blood test? Your doctor will tell you how long to fast, as it is different for each test. Examples of fasting times for some blood tests are listed in the table below.

For this testing to be performed you are required to fast overnight prior to the blood test. This means that you should consume no food or drink (except plain water) for at least 12 hours before the blood test. Please DO continue to take any prescribed medication with water only. It is possible to perform the blood test if you have not fasted.
