Panzer, series of battle tanks fielded by the German army in the 1930s and ’40s. The six tanks in the series constituted virtually all of Germany’s tank production from 1934 until the end of World War II in 1945. Panzers provided the striking power of Germany’s panzer (armoured) divisions.
The Panzer IV was the most numerous and versatile German tank of the Second World War, with over 8,500 built and used in all theatres. It was designed to support infantry and fight anti-tank guns, but later upgraded to counter the Soviet T-34 and other threats.

It is one of the most nondescript but also one of the most important German tanks, with over 1,190 built between late 1934 and early 1936.
